RAWING and PAINTING FROM LIFE is what’s taught to students in proper art education. Thus, there is only one of two reasons why an art instructor would offer to ‘teach’ the copying of photographs:

☑️ REASON #1: 👉 The art instructor lacks traditional academic art education that promotes DRAWING FROM LIFE as the timeless foundation of mastery and prerequisite of becoming a better artist;

☑️ REASON #2: 👉 The art instructor panders to the popular taste of copying photographs, instead of teaching that the copying of photos is only a convenient shortcut to a brief moment of self-satisfaction, and in the long run it slows down the students’ learning process and makes them more dependent on the camera.

Igor V. Babailov, Honorary American Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts (est.1757), began his formal academic training at the age of 9. In sixteen years (1974-1990), he attained the highest levels of the academic art education having received the doctoral equivalent, Master of Fine Arts degree (M.F.A.) from the world acclaimed Surikov State Academic Art Institute (aka Surikov Academy) of the historic Russian Academy of Arts (est.1757) which taught and gave the world many outstanding Masters, including the great American artist Whistler.

Through his unparalleled academic art education at the studios of the world-acclaimed art academy, Igor Babailov belongs to the direct and formal Academic lineage of world-famous Master artists, Ilya Repin and Valentin Serov. Babailov follows the traditions of his famous teachers and, since his graduation from the Academy over 35 years ago, he continues to share his professional knowledge and artistic expertise with his students and fellow artists from around the world.
